Fox, MLB deliver on expectations for Field of Dreams game

Fox' broadcast of MLB's Field of Dreams game last night did what sports TV productions "dream about -- it over-delivered on expectations," according to Richard Deitsch of THE ATHLETIC. The ending of the White Sox' 9-8 win over the Yankees was "just part of the story," as MLB and Fox’ investment to "make this feel like an event played out remarkably." The net had "elements befitting a postseason game," including "39 cameras, 50-plus microphones, multiple aerial production drones." The graphics had an "old-time feel," and there was "no digital signage." The production "captured what was happening writ large." There were "small touches that viewers could appreciate," including the "'Field of Dreams' music taking viewers to commercial breaks." MLB has "already committed to another game" in Dyersville, but the question is whether you can "duplicate 'special' annually." The Iowa site can be one of those places where a "permanent game always feels special if you change up the teams" (THEATHLETIC.com, 8/13). National Journal's Josh Kraushaar: "Incredible production by FOX on the Field of Dreams game." VSiN's Wes Reynolds: "FOX is gonna get some Sports Emmys for that #MLBatFieldofDreams broadcast" (TWITTER.com, 8/12).
