Cincinnati Reds to play Chicago Cubs in 2022 Field of Dreams game

It may not be heaven, but the Cincinnati Reds are headed to Iowa to play in the Field of Dreams game next year. 

After the successful Field of Dreams game debut last week between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees, the Reds will face the Chicago Cubs in the 2022 version in Dyersville, Iowa, a source confirmed to The Enquirer.

It was first reported by NBC Sports Chicago. Major League Baseball has not made an announcement. 

"I think the reception that this has received has been so positive that we will be back," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said before last week's Field of Dreams game. 

Next year's game is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11, 2022, which was a scheduled off day for both teams. The Reds and Cubs will play the final two games of their three-game series at Great American Ball Park from Aug. 13-14. 

The Reds will lose one weekend home game to participate in the Field of Dreams game. The club lost two homes game in 2019 when they were the "home" team in Monterrey, Mexico, against the St. Louis Cardinals. 

The Field of Dreams game last week drew overwhelmingly positive reviews from players and fans. Kevin Costner, the lead actor from the 1989 movie, led players onto the field. It was FOX's most-watched regular-season game since 2005 with 5.9 million viewers. 

“That was as special and breathtaking a setting for a baseball game that I can ever remember being a part of,” New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the New York Times. “When we walked out through the cornfields and saw the stadium, just the perfection of the night, with Kevin Costner standing out there in short center field, that’s a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

The 1919 Black Sox Scandal was a central part of the "Field of Dreams" movie and the Reds beat the White Sox in the World Series in eight games. 

Dyersville constructed an 8,000-seat ballpark with a cornfield behind the outfield fence. Tickets for last week's game reportedly ran above $1,300.

“The field is beautiful,” White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito told the Chicago Sun-Times. “I wouldn’t say I was skeptical, but I wasn’t expecting it to be put together so well. Impressive attention to detail. It blew me away.”

"It’s the experience," White Sox reliever Liam Hendriks said. "I’m a fan running around right now.”

Cubs manager David Ross let it slip the Cubs were scheduled to play in next year's Field of Dreams game during a chat with reporters last week. Now, next season's matchup is set.
